The feasibility and the necessity of providing a vehicle brake function monitoring system is demonstrated. The relevant thermodynamic laws are discussed and taken into account. The problem solution is based on the thermal relationship between 'good' and 'defective' brake performance. Temperature sensing and evaluation is therefore the central task of the proposed system. Various temperature sensing devices are described and their suitability for this duty is analysed. The encouraging test results demonstrate the feasibility of the control algorithm, the high sensitivity and the general applicability of the system concept. The possibility of developing the total algorithm further, to extend its use, for instance into the ABS control area, is described. Future prospects and problems are considered.
