Like safety, driving comfort and price, the cost of vehicle use is one of the aspect which determines the consumer choice. In the field of impacts a lot of work has been done to design bumpers to protect cars from damage at low speed (4 km/h). However most of the impacts arrive at higher speed. This type of crashes, with extended material damage, implies high repair costs and determines directly or indirectly the level of the insurance premium. Designing steel structures with non-linear finite elements codes provide great possibilities for improving the behaviour of the structure. However the use of new materials may bring innovative solutions to this problem too. This paper analyses the problem of energy absorption in cars at 15 km/h and gives an estimation of the potential of new materials. Then the work focuses on the use of SMC composite for the design of energy absorbers.
