Adaptive feedforward noise control systems for vehicle interiors have demonstrated successful cancellation of correlated noise below 300 Hz at measurement microphone sensor locations. Resulting noise levels have been observed to increase over narrow, discrete frequency ranges at locations separated from microphone sensors. This paper will demonstrate this narrow band noise increase phenomena analytically and show that an analytical acoustic model of vehicle interior allows removal of these narrow band peaks through the creation of 'virtual microphone' locations in the interior. These locations do no need to be at or near physical microphone sensors. The model based feedforward control algorithm is shown to reduce the noise level at 'virtual microphone' locations. The noise reduction at 'virtual microphone' locations do not exhibit the frequency-localized noise increases which are observed in the current adaptive feedforward algorithms. This work is demonstrated through computer simulations of a three dimensional acoustic model of vehicle interior.
