Past research has repeatedly demonstrated the fact that a semiactive (SA) damper, if operated properly, can provide levels of control authority in automotive suspensions that are comparable to a fully active hydraulic damper. In the past, auto manufacturers have tended to rely on shock absorber manufacturers to provide prototype SA dampers for testing and development of variable suspension designs on automobiles. Most SA damper designs utilize a pre-designed operating characteristic that is basically 'fixed', save for the fact that by varying an orifice opening, the level of damping can be changed (possibly continuously) over a range of values. The iterative process of re-fitting a damper each time a change in operational characteristics is required can be costly and will likely produce delays in the engineering development of a SA suspension design. This paper describes the development of a generic SA damper that will make it possible to easily change, test, and validate different operating characteristics. A simple hydraulic flow circuit is examined that includes a hydraulic actuator, a high bandwidth servo valve, and an assemblage of solenoid operated check valves. The nominal design proposed also includes the use of a small accumulator. A dynamic model of the SA shock is developed and its performance and bandwidth are examined. Simulations of the proposed SA damper design on a quarter-car model of an automobile suspension are included.
