Nissan has developed Intelligent Body Assembly System (IBAS) to replace conventional vehicle body assembly lines exclusively designed for each vehicle type. This new system enables it to produce any type of Nissan's vehicles on a single line. The model change over can be done by just changing robot manufacturing programs associated with the product type. Currently, Nissan has 13 IBAS body assembly lines operating in its domestic and overseas plants: 8 are for body main assembly and 5 for sub assembly. Remarkable reduction in the investments and in the production leadtime for a new model changeover has been attained. This paper describes the basic concepts of IBAS and some of the fundamental technologies for the development of IBAS.
