Today the measurement of cylinder pressure in R&D is essential for improving the engine efficiency and for reducing the emissions. Usually piezoelectric sensors are placed directly into the cylinder head or the engine block. That means considerable costs are incurred for design and machining. The measuring spark plugs described in the following paper provide a solution for reducing both expense and lead time. The development history of an instrumented spark plug with pressure sensor is presented. The principle investigations are concerned with the oscillations in the pipe and different amplifier types for the sensor. The measuring spark plug is qualified with engine measurements. Both, the thermodynamic optimisation of the combustion process, as well as the engine calibration are discussed.
