A methodology for developing 'parsimonious' passenger car ride discomfort models from large scale objective and subjective ride databases is discussed. The example database included subjective discomfort ratings and vehicle acceleration measurements for twenty drivers in 13 passenger vehicles operating on 24 public roads in the U.S. Strict objective and subjective test protocols were used during the data collection. Predicted Residual Sum of Squares and Mallow's CP statistics were used to develop parsimonious ride discomfort models from amongst the highly inter-correlated driver/vehicle acceleration measurements.
