Traction and stability control systems have been designed on the basis of the ABS system being already available in the car. The proper evaluation of wheel speeds, the calculation of slip and acceleration or deceleration thus is required to determine the appropriate control commands for engine and brake control. To achieve an even more accurate idea of the momentary situation of the car concerning its stability, it was proposed to compare the actual vehicle position with the result achieved on the basis of a computer simulation. Input Signals for conventional stability and traction control systems are the wheel speeds only. In the new DSC the steering angle is also considered. A comparison between the actual and the ideal vehicle behaviour is carried out. The improvement in vehicle stability and handling was investigated during test runs on different roads and test circuits.
