Some historical reflections are presented on the efforts that have been made to understand the dynamic behavior of the motor vehicle, starting with Lanchester and continuing on to the present. The directional behavior of the motor vehicle, in its various forms, is given major attention as a result of the author's contributions to this effort. Additional aspects of road vehicle behavior (such as ride and rollover) are addressed, with substantial emphasis being given to the primary force-producing mechanism involved, namely, the pneumatic tire. The presentation concludes with some predictions and speculations regarding future research. Throughout, a personal perspective is adopted, with the advantage of hindsight.
