A variable-stroke spark-ignition internal combustion engine is described. The variable stroke offers two alternative features compared to a fixed-stroke crankshaft. The first feature allows nearly constant volume combustion to prevent extra compressive work during ignition and achieve higher peak temperature and pressure. The second feature is a power stroke longer than the compression stroke so that additional work may be extracted during gas expansion to nearly atmospheric pressure. A theoretical model describing the geometry and thermodynamic behavior is presented. The model is used to compare thermodynamic efficiencies of engines featuring the variable-stroke crankshaft and engines with a standard fixed-stroke crankshaft. The relative contributions of both extended expansion and constant volume combustion are discussed.
