The choice of coupling for a propshaft is dictated by rotational speed, transmitted torque, articulation angle, plunge capability, generation or transmission of vibration, efficiency and cost. Despite the broad range of requirements, there are few designs of joint in common use. Following a review of the functional requirements of the car manufacturers, GKN has developed an entirely new configuration of joint which can weigh 1 kg less than the alternatives. The Composite Disc Joint is constructed from glass fibre in a resin matrix; the orientations of the glass fibre reinforcement layers are controlled to give the desired combination of torsional, axial and radial stiffness. In this paper the typical configuration of an automotive propshaft is described and an account of the design and development of the Composite Disc Joint is presented.
