A high-strength formable austenitic Fe-25Mn-1Al-0.5C-0.1N steel, named as 'PRK-90', has been developed for automotive structural applications. The PRK-90 steel possesses three times higher tensile strength than those of the current automotive extra low carbon, ferritic steels, while exhibiting a good formability. The gradual formation of strain-induced deformation twins during plastic deformation was responsible for producing the very high strength (YS 500 MPa, UTS 862 MPa) with a good ductility (46 % uniform elongation). The integrated formability tests showed that the PRK-90 steel exhibited an excellent formability for automotive exterior applications. The alloy also possessses a good spot weldability for automated car assembling. The uses of this new austenitic high-strenght alloy to future automotive structure could provide a considerable weight reduction for fuel economy. The resultant laboratory experiment is being scaled up for pilot-scale production at the Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) in Korea.
