Automatic Vehicle Locating systems are at the heart of carbone IVHS technologies. Several different mature technologies exist which can provide vehicle position information to the locating system. However, only two alternatives exist which can provide full vector position data, Global Positioning Systems and Inertial Navigation systems. Until now Global Positioning Systems have been considered to be the leading candidate for this role. However, advances in micro machine solid state accelerometers and gyroscopes should cause a reevaluation of this decision. Not only can Inertial Navigation Systems provide competitive reliability, accuracy and cost compared to Global Positioning Systems, but they also can provide enabling technology for variety of other vehicle system.
