Because of the enormous increase of vehicles, the demand for mobility and a nearly constant resource on roads, different information architectures and traffic management strategies were developed in programs like PROMETHEUS and DRIVE. The goals of these strategies are to increase the traffic flow and to decrease the amount of traffic congestions in order to reduce the driver's stress and therefore diminish the number of accidents and to decrease the air pollution and consequently the fuel consumption. In order to test the above-mentioned strategies PROROAD is being developed. In PROROAD it is possible to interactively generate different traffic scenarios and information infrastructures. Furthermore different traffic management strategies can be chosen for the selected environment. These configurations can then be tested by using an asynchronous discrete event simulation combined with a mesoscopic traffic model. For the realization of the project various knowledge representation techniques of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) e.g. objects, rules, probabilistic reasoning etc. are applied in order to solve the various tasks of the project such as simulation and configuration.
