A Computer-Aided Design procedure is developed to be able to model and design mechanical power transmission systems for automotive and other applications. The computer program includes the integrated design of power shafts, brakes, clutches, spur and helical gears, journal bearings, and antifriction bearings. In a system design, a collection of machine elements such as journal bearings can be optimized according to the selected criterion by the user. The most suitable antifriction bearing available from a catalogue can be selected. Shafts on which the machine elements are mounted, can also be designed according to the selected critierion by the user. The outputs of the program can be seen as solid models on HP-APOLLO workstations.
