A battery-powered electric bicycle can efficiently improve the productivity of bicycle lanes by increasing the average speed of the vehicles. It can also be useful in establishing communication with remote regions of developing countries. The key to a practical electric bicycle is the travel range available from a charged battery. A nickel-metal hydride battery weighing 27 kg can give a 200-km range. Polymer batteries, when they become available, can double this range. The designer of an electric bicycle needs performance data, which we have calculated. We assembled and tested three bicycles with different propulsion configurations to confirm these calculations. The most practical one has a dc motor with its current controlled by T-MOS field-effect power transistors. The motor output, geared to produce a lower speed, is coupled through an over-running clutch and chain to a second sprocket on the rear wheel. We present data from our tests.
