For many years, it has been standard practise, within the military aviation world, to carry out Hydraulic System servicing on a time interval or hours run basis. Front line aircraft, such as the Tornado for example, require Hydraulic Service Trolleys, (HSTs) in order to carry out functional hydraulic checks of the aircraft on the ground as well as provide clean hydraulic oil to flush the aircraft's hydraulic system. By implementing a policy of real time, on-line condition monitoring of the HSTs, considerable time and financial savings can be made. By the very nature of the aircraft the HST can be a very complex system, however principally its main function is to deliver to the aircraft, oil to a known cleanliness standard, at a given flow rate and pressure. As a consequence, routine monitoring of system flow, pressure and cleanliness standards on-line will afford the user the facility to only replace system components, such as pumps and filter elements, when the HST is no longer capable of delivering the oil to the aircraft within the required parameters.
