The results of a study showing the effects of practice changes in the manufacture of rai,l namely improvements in steelmaking practices, on the rail fatigue performance on two U.S. Class I freight railroads will be reviewed. The performance results of both standard carbon and fully heat treated rail indicate a definite decrease in fatigue defect populations within specific time windows when major impovements in steelmaking took place.
