New technologies must pay off economically for an airline. The composites industry has reached a point where it raises the question if there is a balance between airframe weight savings and avoidance of corrosion problems on the one side and additional maintenance burdens on the other side. The following major objectives are reached: further substitution of metals with composites in areas where a significant weight reduction and/or a relief in maintenance burdens is achieved; known design deficiencies are avoided, and the risk of encountering unknown problems is kept as low as possible.
