For several decades, the power cylinders of large bore engines have been restored to like new dimension, with longer lasting wear surface by a porous chromium plating method. Efforts are now underway to develop a thermal spray coating process as a substitute for chromium plating. This paper describes the compounds that were evaluated for the thermal spray coating processes. Results of wear tests against iron and against selected power ring materials are described. The process of moving from laboratory tests to the field tests is covered, as is a vision of what may come.
