The Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) owned National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), is the central repository for results of vehicle demonstrations utilizing alternative fuels. NREL, under the direction of the DOE, is managing these demonstrations, which consist of vehicles fueled by methanol, ethanol, and natural gas. This project was established as part of the Alternative Motor Fuels Act (AMFA) of 1988, and is designed to provide information on the performance, durability, cost of operation, and environmental impact of alternative fuel powered vehicles. Data on basic vehicle power-train information, in-use driver assessments of vehicle performance, fuel economy, maintenance, oil analysis, and emissions are being collected for light duty vehicles (passenger cars, vans and pickups) operating in federal government fleets. As an example, by May of 1993, in the light duty vehicle area, the AFDC is collecting data on 666 alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) including 315 operating on M-85 (85 % methanol and 15 % unleaded gasoline), 326 operating on CNG (compressed natural gas), and 25 operating on E-85 (85 % ethanol and 15 % unleaded gasoline). Data on some vehicles have been continuously collected for more than two years. This paper describes the data collection process, the quality assurance procedures enforced on the data, the accessing software used to allow the user easy, free and useful access to the data, and some observations on the data collected to date.
