General Electric is investigating coal/water slurry as a fuel for diesel-electric locomotives. A coal-fueled diesel engine had to therefore be developed for testing in a locomotive. The present 12-cylinder coal-fueled engine began by modifying a General Electric model 7FDL diesel engine with dual positive-displacement fuel injection systems. The fuel injection system for coal/water slurry is used exclusively at higher loads. The diesel fuel injection system provides both a small amount to enhance coal combustion and large amounts for starting and low loads. This first 12-cylinder coal-fueled diesel engine was operated for 10 hours at up to 1860 kW at 1050 rpm.
