One of the most useful tools a bumper design engineer has at his or her disposal is the beam calculation. These calculations allow the designer to evaluate the capability of a certain design to pass the pendulum and pole impact requirements, if the design is reinforced sufficiently to allow the beam to perform in bending throughout the entire impact. In this way, these calculations are somewhat non-conservative and should always be viewed as such. If the design appears to be able to pass the tests based on hand calculations, further analytical work must be undertaken to develop a design that is table throughout the entire impact. A brief comparison of currently used hand calculations is given here. A technique for estimating the lateral loads exerted on the vehicle frame during centerline pendulum impacts has been developed. These loads can either be determined by sophisticated hand calculations or by using beam finite-element analysis. The loads can either be determined as a fraction of the peak impact load, or as an absolute number. The dependence of the lateral load on frame stiffness, bumper cross-section, and bumper sweep will be shown to be quite dramatic.
