Many heat exchanger applications in aerospace involve the use of some form of plate-fin surface, which may be straight, corrugated or serrated depending on available space and other requirements. The use of stainless steel or other low conductivity material of construction carries the penalty of low fin efficiency, and can mean excessive weight if the fin thickness is not correctly chosen. This paper presents a dimensionless analytical method of calculating the size and weight parameters of a simplified plate-fin heat exchanger core for a given thermal duty. It is shown that there is a unique fin thickness at which the core weight is a minimum. This 'optimum' fin thickness is shown to be a function of several geometric, material and performance parameters.
