A survey on heat exchanger technology and heat transfer enhancement within EC programmes (JOULE) is given. Compact and ceramic gas-gas heat exchangers for high temperature applications, heat pipes and thermosyphons, gas-liquid heat exchangers (enhanced heat transfer surfaces, plastic heat exchangers, chemical reactors with integrated heat exchangers), gas-solid heat recovery, liquid-liquid heat recovery (shell and tube heat exchangers, double pipe heat exchangers) are given. Complementary activities as heat exchanging fouling and defouling problems, improved performance-cost activities, alternative refrigerants, and expert systems for heat exchanger selection and optimization are given.
