The Greenville Division of E-Systems, Inc., conducted a study to determine the feasibility of installing a large telescope into an aircraft for NASA astronomy investigations. The program, named SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) by NASA's Ames Research Center, requires all facets of engineering to work concurrently in an effort to solve the many problems encountered with an effort of this magnitude. CAD/CAE was utilized since it allows all disciplines of Design Engineering access to a central data base to aid them in solving their individual problems, and reduces time and effort required to obtain optimal solutions. The aircraft selected for the platform was a Boeing 747. The selection was based on its ability to meet the flight profiles required for the given mission and payload. The two models of aircraft studied are the 747-200 and 747 SP. A cavity opening, approximately 200 by 200 inches, is located in the aft fuselage. This cavity will be covered with a door that will open at observation altitude to expose the telescope lens, and will track up and down as the telescope moves during operation. The Structural Design group developed CAD models of the fuselage of both of the subject aircraft, while the Mechanical Systems group looked at the requirements for the cavity opening, and the Installation Design group developed models of the component parts of the telescope and all its controls and subsystems. The Aerodynamic, Stress, Mass Properties, Structural Dynamics groups gave inputs/requirements for design configuration.
