Low speed roller brake testers, essentially a type of chassis dynamometer, are used in various countries throughout the world to evaluate the braking performance of motor vehicles. These test devices are found in government operated safety inspection stations, fleet maintenance facilities and repair garages. In one country (Australia) a portable version of the roller tester has been developed and is being utilized for random roadside inspections. While roller brake testers are common in many countries throughout the world, they are virtually nonexistent in the United States. Enhancements have been developed for a low speed roller brake tester to make it a more useful device for analyzing brake system performance and diagnosing braking problems. These enhancements, involving both hardware and software, are general in nature and could be applied to any model of roller brake tester. The most significant hardware enhancement involves the addition of a personal computer, digital data acquisition system and an electronic signboard.
