Ever increasing attention is being given to reducing brake noise to match other improvements in reducing noise levels in the vehicle and general comfort to passengers. Various mechanisms can introduce dynamic instabilities in the brake system such as negative slope of friction with increasing velocity and pin-disc and cantilever/disc instabilities that involve motion at discrete points of contact between pad and disc. An experimental study of passenger car disc brake noise has been carried out using double pulsed laser holographic interferometry techniques. The study of a single holographic image indicates disc vibration mode movement and additional studies confirm this to be the case. They also establish the speed and direction of movement. The effects of changes in the piston/pad contact position are also discussed and it is shown that a mechanical instability can be created over a region with a leading contact. With such an arrangement variations in the operating parameters are shown to have little effect on stabilising the system.
