Testing of a selected sample of a braking system, assuming that it represents by all its characteristics the type that has to be used within a vehicle under consideration, obviously is not in line with the stochastic nature of braking. The results so obtained are not statistically significant. Therefore, to approve a type of braking system on the basis of such testing, a probable scatter of all data has to be estimated. In other words, for each design corresponding conformity bands should be defined. In addition to this, one should bring to mind that even within the same testing procedure the realisation of measurement, test data processing and analysis generally differ to a high degree. It means that testing of the same braking system conducted by different laboratories or technical authorities may give differences in terms of performance, vehicle stability and other significants. It is another reason for the need to carefully consider all possible deviations, ie. for introducing conformity bands. This paper is giving information on the special tests undertaken to investigate the stochastic character of the braking system type approval tests influencing factors. Both input and output parameters related to the braking system type approval tests have shown expressive scatter. All test results are analysed in details and their real statistical meaning is considered through the prospective of the confidence to conformity checks. The imposition of conformity bands is supported and the need for further investigations is pointed out.
