Within the past several years, a new look has been taken at the effects of increasing axle loads on overall railroad operations and costs. This industry endeavor has been driven by the desire for the first time to adequately account for all of the major economic benefits and negatives associated with heavier axle loads. Among the leading economic studies performed in this area have been a series of analyses carried out by Burlington Northern Railroad examining revenue service train movements of unit coal, grain and intermodal containers. This paper wil focus on the equipment (freight car and locomotive) cost considerations to include increased fatigue damage to car body and truck components associated with increased loadings. This will include economic analyses of existing equipment with increased loadings as well as new equipment designed to handle the increased loadings. These conditions will also be examined in light of the impacts of car ownership and maintenance costs on overall 'bottom line' economics of operation.
