This paper reviews the progress of two ongoing programs at the Naval Air Development Center (NAVAIRDEVCEN) which address the application of structural damage detection and assessment systems to aircraft structures. One program, jointly funded with the Air Force, is the Smart Structures Concept Requirements Definition. The objective of this program is to evaluate the concept of smart structures and their application to aerospace vehicles. A smart structure is defined as a structure containing a network of sensors and processors which monitor its integrity in real time throughout the life of the structure. The other program is a NAVAIRDEVCEN Independent Exploratory Development program to develop fiber-optic sensor systems for detecting structural damage. One type of sensor system will be developed to detect delamination and determine the size of the damaged area in composite structures. Another sensor system concept will be developed for sensing cracks in metal structures.
