In recent years the evaluation of heavy vehicle dynamic performance has been the focus of a significant research effort. There is a trend toward the development of a set of measures that will characterize the behaviour of vehicles within the context of responsible safety-related operating limits. This study examines several existing safety-related constant speed performance measures that define the stability, control, and offtracking characteristics of commercial freight vehicles and makes some recommendations for improvements. The definitions, the methods of evaluation, and the limits of the existing measures are discussed. The measures put forward are suitable for use with a single computer program adapted for use on a PC. It is controlled by a post-processor that calculates each measure according to predetermined manoeuvres and yields a pass /fail conclusion.
