This paper examines the major international impetus to reduce the perceived environmental impact of motor vehicle emissions. It charts the development of the relevant regulations, and discusses in more detail tailpipe, CO2, evaporative and refuelling emissions, stationary sources and re-cycling. It also addresses some of the solutions proposed in the 'ultra low and zero emission' vehicle concepts, such as the electric vehicle. Attention is drawn to the potential contribution of improvements to existing fuels, and future alternatives.
