Robotics systems are currently utilized by automotive manufacturers to dispense urethane adhesive onto glass for bonding to car bodies. To meet governmental regulations for performance of the bond in crash testing, the dispensing process must be controlled properly to ensure consistent bead deposition throughout the range of robot speed changes and consistency from part-to-part in spite of changes in material viscosity due to temperature and shear. This paper discusses the application of new technology in a system which employs closed-loop pressure and volume feedback control to ensure reliable material flow. It satisfies bead deposition requirements by controlling material pressure in the nozzle of the gun proportional to robot speed changes. It provides process control by adjusting that pressure cycle-by-cycle to compensate for material changes.
