Shear walls of large offshore stuctures are weakened by holes cut in them to allow the passage of services and equipment. The object of this project was to investigate experimentally the buckling behavior of steel square plates with circular holes in order to provide data for the verification of theoretical predictions. A finite element analysis had been previously performed to predict the ultimate load carrying capacity and buckling behaviour of such shear plates. The experimental results were correlated well with the theoretical predictions regarding lateral deflections and the critical buckling loads.
