The driving condition 'braking in a turn' is one of the most critical manoeuvres and particular attention must be paid to this condition if it is attempted to improve the directional behaviour of commercial vehicles. A simulation system analyses the factors which predominantly influence the handling characteristics of a commerical vehicle carrying out this manoeuvre. Yaw velocity is a suitable quantity for evaluating the directional behaviour. The studies show that the highest values and time behaviour of yaw velocity greatly depend on longidutinal deceleration an the initial lateral acceleration. In addition, the reaction of the vehicle is influenced by the properties of the tires and the axle elastokinematics. The dominant factor influencing the directional behaviour of a vehicle braking in a turn is the braking force distribution at that specific moment. An anti-lock braking system an substantially contribute to vehicle safety.
