The problems associated with designing an active control scheme for an articulated heavy truck have been considered. Because of the interaction between different vibrational modes it was necessary to included bounce and pitch modes in the simulation ofa 4 x 2 tractor and twin axle semi-trailer combination. Several sub-optimal control laws were developed from an initial optimal full state feedback scheme. Results of simulations over a smooth road profile at 20 m/s showed that a 'minimum sensor' algorithm gave most of the benefits associated with the optimal fulls state feedback system.
