An optimized coordination of powertrain functions including engine control, throttle control, and transmission control can result in significant fuel economy improvements combined with prompt acceleration response to pedal movements, which was confirmed by a prototype realization. A hierarchical control structure is a very suitable frame for the coordination of powertrain functions and allows to realize these optimization with a minimized number of interfaces.
