Additional rear wheel steering of a vehicle provides an opportunity to influence its dynamic behaviour. Use of a state feedack controller with an integrator not only makes it possible to achieve any steering characteristic desired but also to considerably improve the disturbance response. This controller not only gives any steady-state steering characteristics (yaw rate gain ) to the vehicle but also any desired dynamic characteristics (yaw damping and response time). It can also compensate for all external disturbing influences (gusts of wind, roads with differing surface adhesion) and correct all deviations from the course due to malignments of the chassis (brakes pulling to one side, incorrectly aligned axles). Use of an observer can reduce the number of sensors required. Only the steering wheel angle, the rear wheel angle, the forward speed and the yaw rate are measured to control the handling characteristics. Tests carried out on a passenger car fitted with additional rear wheel steering confirmed the above-described considerations. Control of vehicle handling characteristics not only improves driving stability. It also allows all drivers to be provided with driving characteristics which optimally balance driving safety and driving comfort. Many problems in chassis technology - all of which can only be solved with great development efforts - can be overcome by means of controlling the handling characteristics.
