The coefficient of friction between tyre and road is of utmost importance for driving safety. Sensors for stress and strain inside the tyre's tread were developed and applied for research on force transfer and tyre-noise. From their signals friction demand and - within limits - friction potential can be derived. Other sensors measure road-side parameters influencing friction. With some processing including a friction-model friction potential can be computed from their data. Both systems supplement each other. Research on them is done at the Institute of Automotive Engineering of Darmstadt University. This paper presents the current state of this research project.
