Theoretically, an efficient cost effective continuously variable transmission (CVT) can improve every aspect of a vehicle's performance. In current practice, however, torque and efficiency limitations and a single regime of operation have restricted CVT's to low power small cars so that the potential benefits are difficult to achieve. Torotrak have demonstrated that a Rover 820i on the US Federal cycle fitted with a 2 regime toroidal traction Infinitely Variable Transmission (IVT), improved fuel consumption by 11 % and improved emissions when compared with an equivalent manual transmission vehicle. The potential for further improvement is greatly enhanced by taking full advantage of the IVT features in an integrated driveline. This paper outlines some ways in which the compromise between current engine design parameters can be shifted to achieve significant improvements in specific engine performance when integrated with an IVT. In this way, vehicle performance, fuel economy, refinement and emissions can be noticeably improved.
