The automobile designer is faced with many problems during all phases of a design project. In a multi-disciplinary, multi-phase project, the designer is under considerable pressure to meet design release dates. It is not surprising therefore, that in many cases, downstream activities such as assembly processes receive only scant regard, or are not considered in a structured and meaningful manner. This company decided to investigate the various systems available, to objectively assess component assemblies with a view to introducing a system company wide. This paper provides an overview of the experiences gained during the assessment of the chosen system and the potential benefits and concerns raised during the pilot study programme.
