Disposal of vehicles at end of life is recognised as a critical factor in the motor industry. Concern is increasing on account of growing public awareness of environmental issues, often articulated within legislation, and difficulties in the existing disposal industry due to rising plastics content in vehicles. CEST has analysed this situation as part of its programme on the environment. CEST's approach is geared towards consideration of the total problem, involving the spectrum of industrial sectors which are relevant to the issue. It allows us to identify scenarios of pressure for change applied to the industry, and the set of strategic responses which could be appropriate; these relate to design procedures within companies as well as to intrastructural facilities. This paper describes the methodology which has been applied, which draws heavily on the existing and ongoing activities and current thinking within the industry. It then describes the recommendations resulting from the consultative process, and the way it is proposed to manage their implementation.
