Software is now becoming an important component, albeit one of many, within automotive systems. The invisible nature of software makes it more difficult to be subjected to rigorous pre-production testing. This paper is focussing on the special problems in validating that an automotive software component is 'fit for its purpose'. Furthermore, validation is viewed as a sub-set of a broader and more varied software assessment activity. As the purpose of the software may vary from simple non-critical switching functions to performing complex real-time control functions, this causes the process of assessing software to vary. Although there are many influences on the process of software assessment or validation, the key ones are the inherent complexity and the criticality of the application. This paper discusses the nature of automotive software, the process of its validation within an Assessment Model, and discusses the way forward for the automotive sector.
