The nature, strengths and weaknesses of alternative methods for updating finite element models of structural dynamics using experimentally-derived modal data are reviewed. A method based on sensitivity analysis and weighted parameter updating is presented, which offers a robust methodology, using sound numerical algorithms within a procedure which also offers flexibility and control. The parameters are directly related to physical, engineering data used in the finite element model. Various application examples are explained, related to automotive structures and in particular the effects of joint flexibilities in different types of model.
