The effects of design parameters such as torque, tension, pulley size, angle of wrap, belt width, friction coefficient, and stiffness on synchronous (toothed) belt life have been investigated using a mechanical model written into a computer program for belt life prediction. The model has been validated using experimental data from a life test dynamometer designed to simulate automotive camshaft drive operating conditions; valve train dynamics, driving torques between 0.75 and 1.5 Nm per mm of belt width, and an operating environment of 100 deg. C were all included in the test conditions. The results provide a quantitative assessment of belt performance at the design stage, and enable belt materials, belt design and construction, system layout, and valve train dynamic loadings to be optimized.
