After two years of a preliminary feasibility study on an advanced, new concept electric vehicle (abbreviated as EV) in the type of IMPACT by GM, we developed a prototype EV, named IZA, in comparatively high grade as an EV. The EV was demonstrated at the 29th Tokyo Motor Show held in October 1991, and gave strong impression to the public with its high ability and environmental impacts. At the moment, it is evaluated that the EV has realized most of the intended performances, i.e., max speed of 176 km/h, 0-400 m acceleration in 18.05 seconds, range in one charge at 40 km/h constant speed covers 548 km, as well as performances, vehicle body (Cd = 0.193) etc. This high performance is realized mainly by a powerful wheel-in motor (max. torque 42 kg-m, max power 25 kW for each wheel). Newly developed NiCd battery is adopted to increase energy density. In the paper, outline of the EV is shown as well as basic concepts and some results of the performance tests briefly. We will also show the general features of IZA, and some of performance tests by a brief Video Movie.
