The objective of Machine Health Monitoring is the early detection of symptoms that could later develop in troublesome failures. This is a topic that spontaneously lends itself to the analogy with organic systems. It can be said that condition monitoring in machinery aims to perform a function similar to pain in organisms. In technological research and development, along with the aim to produce 'intelligent' machines, a parallel and complementary aim is to produce 'sensitive' machines. Advanced technologies promote the move from detection of the gross macroscopic failures that often produce irreversible damage to detection of the more subtle microscopic processes that initiate those failures. The advantages of an early diagnostic are sometimes invaluable. They vary according to the application, ranging from safety, reliability and performance to large economic savings with predictive maintenance.
