The introduction of BS5750 into London Underground train maintenance depots required an objective standard of maintenance to be defined. A new maintenance standards manual was developed for each train type that had a consistent format wih the maximum use of common definitions. A universal structure of train component elements was used. With all the component parts identified, the preventive maintenance work for each was recorded. The new standards were prepared with the major input and leadership from front line maintenance, with the central quality and standards organisation actively in support.
