Auomotive components are volume produced using a range of materials and manufacturing processes. The finished parts vary enormously in terms of shape, size and type of surface finish. In addition, most parts have to endure very complex service duties. A fatigue assessment methodology for these components, therefore, calls for a broad range of skills including an understanding of material behaviour, strength reduction effects of special features, failure mechanisms, loading modes and stress analysis. The demands placed on fatigue analysis systems for load bearing automotive parts which are manufactured in bulk with a variety of technologies, materials, shapes and sizes are outlined. A knowledge-based (KB) approach for fatigue analysis and design of automotive components is discussed. A prototype KB system is described.
